Steps necessary to recover Yahoo account password

As the public interest grows on the on-going Yahoo complaint petition for password reset, we decided to write this article to help future victims to deal with this issue. Just a Google search on “Yahoo password reset” returned more than four million results!!.

Before talking about the steps necessary to reset the password, let me tell you something uncanny, which you may not like it. You should be happy that your account is locked!! Why? Read this scary identity theft victim story. At least your hacker had changed the password so that you know for sure you are a victim. Once you know you are a victim, you can take necessary steps to limit any potential financial damages. Just for a second imagine what could happen if the hacker hadn’t changed the password. So take a moment to thank your hacker/Phisher.

Ok, now that your account is locked what to do:

1. Confirm that your account is really locked. Retry sign-in multiple times and also make sure to try from different computers. Also make sure Yahoo has not closed your account due to inactivity – You can assume that this is not the case if you had accessed the account within last 30 days. We believe the actual account inactivity time limit is way more than 30 days.

2. Once confirmed that your account is locked, try the Yahoo online password reset procedure.

3. If you had used the locked email account for any online transactions (banking, online retailing, etc) make sure to contact those companies to change your email address immediately.

4. Now is the time to contact Yahoo. Call 866-562-7219 to talk to a Yahoo representative to reset the password. The customer representatives need your date of birth in order to reset the password. You are out of luck if you don’t remember the data of birth on the file.

5. If the above step doesn’t work, you can email to Yahoo security group at account-security-help@cc.yahoo-inc.com. This group supposedly has more authoritative power than the toll free representatives.

6. If the above two steps didn’t work, it is time for you to give up the yahoo account and move on. But before moving on, make sure to cancel this account by writing to reportabuse@cc.yahoo-inc.com. At this time, we don’t know how efficient Yahoo in closing the accounts. Be a good citizen: Make sure to warn your social network (people on your address book) about this problem and not to click on any email or IM from your yahoo ID.

Please make sure to share your Yahoo experiences at Tecross. You can do it either by writing a blog or taking a Yahoo customer service survey. This way you can share your experiences with other victims.

There were unconfirmed stories where individuals have repeatedly contacted Yahoo to successfully reset their passwords. Based on our findings, Yahoo will not reset your password without confirming your date of birth on their file regardless the number of times you contact them.

Before concluding, we just want to remind folks that this is a very serious issue and there is no single solution to the problem. We can understand why Yahoo is taking this extreme measure; otherwise anyone can get access to your account by contacting them. However, we do understand the pain and fear the account owners have to go through. Shortly we’ll look more into this issue – currently there are about 10 petition signatures on the outstanding Yahoo complaint.     thanks soo very much for the info you show re help with password for my yahoo account. i was at my witts end with a wrong d.o.b. and had forgotten my password. my response fm yahoo was sorry too bad!! – however from yr website i was able to find the very ELUSIVE telephone number of yahoo customer service and thankfully spoke very quickly (cos noone else can find their number!!!) to a customer rep who actually HELPED ME!!!!!!! YES OH YES!!! i have my account and MY LIFE back!! THANKYOU.

    J.R- If you remember your date of birth on the file, then you should be able to reset your password by calling the Yahoo support number. If you dont have the date of birth, then join others with the on-going petition; we still need 33 or so signatures to take action.

    After my password got stolen ,I followed all the steps given in your website. I am from India and called up the contact numbers of Customer Service given in your site. They were very helpful and after complete verification told me to contact second level i.e. sending E mail to account-security-help@cc.yahoo-inc.com. First I received automated response to my message asking me to furnish certain details. After doing that again got a mail asking for the secret question,which I have done a number of times only to get the NON DELIVERY message each time which is as follows:

    KP Singh- There is no way for you to access your Yahoo Groups without reseting your password, for which you need your d.o.b and things like secret questions, zip etc.

    Not sure why the email is not working; we’ll test it and let you know shortly.

    I was in my email last night and after I logged out I was using the messager, I accepted one Invitation from a Alesia Johnson. About 15minutes after I saw a email notice that my ” new password is confirmed” Please help me? I just got a credit report for a loaner the day before with all mine and my girlfriends information. Please I started my account while living in another country and I can’t remember my security question.

    Again, based on our experience, they will not do anything unless you have the d.o.b. Good luck.

    Kenny- Follow the instructions outlined in this article. The Yahoo customer representative will probably reset your password as long as you know the date of birth on the file – so go ahead and call them.

    I have spoke to yahoo customer service. I didn’t call the toll free number I got their (408)349-3300 this leads to several extensions. I don’t know if I should contact any of these person on these extension to restore my ID back. The customer service didn’t do nothing to get my ID back. I have tried email to their security team and all I got back was their automated response. I just had it. What’s your recommendation??

    I lost my primary Yahoo account back on April 28, 2006. Repeated attempts to regain my account were unsuccessful. Going through the security process, I was able to provide every single piece of information correctly, INCLUDING DATE OF BIRTH, but not the “Secret Answer” to the “Secret Question” which I didn’t even remember from 8 years ago when I set up the account. While I had confirmed my date of birth, primary and secondary emails, zip code, and even sent them copies of successful password changes to the account, Yahoo would not recover my account because “Yahoo does not provide support services to those who cannot provide ALL of the required information”. In this case, my “Secret Answer”. And since I can’t provide that information, Yahoo will not respond to my inquiries by phone or email. Now What? I can’t say I’m financially damaged, so it doesn’t look like I qualify for your petition.

    Im having the same problem, my user id has been taken and the password changed, luckily me being a teenager, i dont have anything important in that email address however i do wish to recover my yahoo id and my contact. I made my yahoo account 4-5 years ago and i dunno the dob anything. I changed my password about 1 year ago and all the dob everything worked fine. Im think that the hacker also changed my dob and other information as soon as he/she got into the account because i know it is possible to change the dob Someone please help me to find my yahoo password because otherwise i wont have all my contact (more than 200 of them) It was working this morning but i signed off to eat breakfast and when i came back not working Please help me thanks keyur

    thanks for the information, someone hacked into my account just 2 days ago i managed to ring yahoo and they simply got it resolved and rese for me within 20 mins, it has taken a huge weight off my shoulders as my personal info, bank details and other login and job details etc were saved on ther for my reference, thanks guys 4 helping and thanks to yahoo for a prompt service!!
